The boat

The vessel “SAL X”, a Riviera 36 (renovated in 2023), is fully equipped for Big Game Fishing, providing high quality equipment and comfort for all activities in salt water, such as leisure activities with friends and family or for scientific research.

The boat has all the essentials that a fishing machine needs. It is stable, reliable, and designed for the open ocean. The twin 370 HP Cummins engines give the boat a cruise speed of 18 knots and top speed of 26 knots. It is also fully equipped with a fighting chair, outriggers, downriggers, and all the essentials for fishing: rods, reels, tackle, lures, bait and fishing licenses included.

All the required amenities are on board. There is a toilet, a kitchen and a comfortable area for leisure and meals.

SAL X, is prepared for the big battles at the Algarve’s deep blue waters, between the fisherman and the big pelagic. Starting with the GIANT BlueFin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus), you and your party must be prepared, as this a powerful animal that doesn’t give up and can be active for more than 2 hours. Also, the beautiful and jumpy Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans), and last but not least, the White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus), which can jump near the boat when hooked. During the trips you will also catch other small tunas, such as the Skipjack (Katsuwonus Plamis), the Bonito and the Mahi-Mahi, and that is an experience to have more than once.

Sustainability and research

All these activities are always focusing on environmental responsibility and making our costumers aware of the need to preserve the species on our shore.

Big specimens are always released. Ensuring the best conditions for their survival is a priority, following the guidelines of international associations such as IGFA and Billfish Foundation.

In Portugal, Ocean Fun & Fishing also collaborates with scientific researchers for the study of various species, mainly with the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

Meet João A. Melo,
the Captain!

João A. Melo, born in 1969 in Portugal, has had a passion for the sea and fishing, since he was a child. With a wide professional experience in tourism and events, in 2013 he opened a tourist maritime business activity, focusing on Big Game fishing at the Algarve (Olhão), thus fulfilling the desire to work on what he likes the most.

Along with this, his other goal is to practice sustainable fishing and to protect the species he loves by catching, tagging, and releasing them, as well as collaborating with scientific researchers.

In 2016, he created Ocean Fun & Fishing Big Game Portugal, always striving for excellence he won the 2019 Tavira Offshore Classic Marlin Cup.

Later on in 2023 he acquired and renovated the vessel “SAL X”, a Riviera 36 which is prepared to provide the best experience of Big Game fishing in Algarve-Portugal.

In 2024, thinking about improving our capabilities and the quality of customer service, Capt. Joao A. Melo was admitted as an IGFA CAPTAIN.
